3 weeks ago means it pretty must has to have been 1.31.5 you were on then. IOW that same game version used to run okay for you but now does not ... !

Let's try a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-EU4
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/EU4 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/EU4 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add EU4.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test with a new campaign - NOT any existing one

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam EU4 or Documents EU4 locations, before installing again.

Okay then, when you said 'recently' in your OP here, when was it that the game last performed okay for you? Do you know what patch version that was?

What we are trying to establish here is whether a version that used to work okay for you is now slow (so the problem has just occurred) or is okay (so the problem may be in a game patch).

The developers have acknowledged that the 1.31.x patches are slower than the 1.30.x ones, due to having added too many new provinces. Now that does not completely line up with your apparent experience that this only happened with 1.31.6 - 1.31.5 ought to have been just as slow, I believe!

How does 1.31.5 perform for you?

It does sound like some local network or ISP issue.

Do you have a VPN set up? If so try running that then run this game - does it work then?

Are you playing with other Epic users, or are they on Steam or elsewhere?

This error means your computer is not on good internet time, which confuses our servers. Go into the Date&Time control panel and make sure Set Time Automatically is ON. Then hit the Sync Now button.

Then run the game again, the launcher will probably update itself now.

Re-reading your OP I now notice this only happens when you exit a game session back to the main menu, is that right? If so, this game is unusual in that it actually restarts itself when you do that, to clear game memory and MP connections. That may have somethign to do with your symptoms, in combination with running on an Intel video system (which is not supported hardware for this game FYI).

I assume if you just exit the game and restart it, it goes okay for you?

And, what if you put the game in windowed display mode in our launcher, before starting it? Same problem?

I'm not aware that the launcher deliberately edits mod files - that would seem pretty strange to me! But I don't use or have anything to do with mods so I can't say 100%.

If you upload this mod to the Steam workshop or our mod site, then subscribe to it, do you get similar problems?

If the save file does not show in the game's Load menu, then it is not recognised by the game as a valid save file. IOW it is corrupted.

Hard to imagine that mods would do that, but on the other hand this is not a known issue with the game either. Did you have any sort of crash, hang or other problem while playing it?

I think your best shot is to post those saves over in User Mods; hopefully the experienced modders there can see wha the problem in the file it and fix it. Of course if it is too badly corrupted it may be unfixable.

Right click on the game in your Steam Library, Properties, Betas. Older versions are listed there.

Brutal but perhaps you could flag those files read-only?

I see no reason for this in those files, I'm sorry.

If you revert to the game version from a week ago 1.31.5 , in the Steam Betas tab for this game, is it better again?

There was not a game update today, the most recent was a week ago.

As there were mods involved we really can't help more here, sorry! Please try the User Mods forum.

What happens if you run eu4.exe directly, which bypasses the launcher?

That tells me you have a firewall blocking the new eu4.exe in the 1.31.x patches. That can be in Windows or your internet router/modem.

Does it make any difference which starting option you choose when you run EU4 from Steam?

If you revery to 1.30.6 in the Steam Betas tab for the game, and test with a new test campaign, is that better? Or still poor?
