There's a newer installer:

No, the game does not use them.

We have one more shot before we have to contemplate a clean Windows reinstall. I'm afraid this is a bit of work, but please delete this list of files (about 50 in total)

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\mfc100.dll
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\mfc100u.dll

This may be a bug in the launcher, which seems to require MacOS 12 now. Were you at all thinking of updating MacOS? If so please do that and confirm for me that it helps, then I can report that to the developers.

In the Windows Control Panel uninstall Visual C++ 2010 and 2015/17/19/22 - there may be several instances of each.

THEN Install ALL these Microsoft modules:

Download Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update from Official Microsoft D...

Did you run that repair tool? If so did it find anything to fix?

Make a new Windows user on this machine and log into it with that. Go into the startup settings and disable everything you can, and reboot. Log in as that new user again - does it work better now?

Nothing we've done here should have prevented the game running.

Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-EU4
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Europa Universalis IV AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add EU4.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam EU4 or Documents EU4 locations, before installing again.

Also if you have installed RivaTuner, RadeonPro, or a gaming VPN app called Evolve, or the MSI Gaming App, or Duet, disable it as it clashes with this game.

What happens if you run eu4.exe directly from File Explorer?

In exactly what way does our launcher not work?

Please try this:

- uninstall Paradox Launcher v2 from the Windows "Apps and features" utility, if still present.

Delete the following folders if still present:

- C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

- exit the Epic app entirely
- run EpicGamesLauncher.exe as the Windows Admin user

- run the game from the Epic client

IF that doesn't help, in this folder are some .log files:
C:/users/{userName}/AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
Please attach them here.
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

That should not be necessary, it is not normal of course. Does it at all say what it fixes when you run that?

Right click on eu4.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.

Edit settings.txt to say:

refreshRate=60
fullScreen=yes
borderless=no

vsync=no

Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode.

IF that doesn't help:
DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .

In File Explorer click on Documents in the left column. In the right pane you'll see Paradox Interactive; go into that and you'll see the EU4 folder. settings.txt is there.

We've seen this a few times with an unrelated game Cities Skylines on the Epic platform. I don't recall another report on this game though.

Please try the following suggestions:
  • Restart the Epic client
  • Launch the game
  • Wait for our launcher to download the update
  • Restart the launcher once this is done and double-check if now says 2023.10 as the Paradox launcher version
  • Click Play in the launcher

Also, please try the suggestions from the following link:

You might try a clean reinstall of nVidia.

Uninstall with https://developer.nvidia.com/cleanup-tool
Reboot
Install August 2023 https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
Reboot again

Good luck!

Thorsfeld said: What are you thinking about when you say "that tends to point to something outside the game"? would it be a preinstalled software?
It could be almost anything - other software as you say, a driver, a Windows glitch, hardware ....

Can you see these crashes in the Windows Event Viewer?
