we can nerf him pretty hard, thats about it. since hes got wip work, we don't want to do major mechanics changes on top of that, and hes 54-55% winrate in midlane (with an equivalent playrate there to top lane) which prevents us from buffing him anywhere else

This is a basic statistical misunderstanding because a huge part of that winrate is correlation.

Same reason Rabadon's deathcap has a high winrate. Not because it's broken, but because you buy it when you're already snowballing. In other words, it gets correlated with winning teams.

So it is with drakes. The team that was better/played better/was winning anyway would pick up the drakes along the way, so of course drakes would have a high winrate.

Here's an example. It's probable that firstblood has a surprisingly high correlation with winrate. But that doesn't imply first blood's reward is too strong. It implies that the better player, who is going to win lane, is likely to be the one to have gotten first blood anyway.

Who are you and why are you bringing LOGIC here?! I feel uncomfortable...

(I kid! I kid! I love coming to this subreddit. You're all an amazing, passionate community and I wouldn't swap you for anything. This post is excellent, though. They're totally right.)

avg winrate across all champs is actually 50.0% exactly

Wait...how could it be anything else?

this is conqueror's winrate... not all winrates in league

Hey bro, do you know anything about the Azir/Corki stuff? IIRC the balance team is waiting to see how conqueror would affect their winrates before changing anything, so I was curious if a verdict has been reached for either of them.

we are considering buffs for both of them

Any plans to do something about poor Urgot, the one ranged character who relied on it before the pre-season changes?

not at the moment but we've been talking about it. right now hes actually in a pretty good spot: 52% wr for AVG elos (90% of our players)

Could you elaborate on why you guys are backpedaling on the Elder buff duration? It made more sense to me being the same duration as Baron buff.

We wanted to simplify it if we could, which is why we equalized durations.

But:

  • Baron is a siege buff while elder is a fighting buff.
  • As a fighting buff, it simply takes less time for teams with Elder to force a fight since they have a large advantage vs waiting for minions to siege a lane
  • Even more so, because of this these two buffs play out differently - Baron asks the defending team to take a proactive action and engage a fight (or the cannon minion will take their base), while Elder asks the defending team to avoid a fight and stall out the buff (or they will get rekt by elder advantage). Unsurprisingly then, it also makes sense that Baron buff is harder to wait out (lasts longer) than Elder.
  • Therefore, when Elder ended up significantly overpowered, we will sacrifice simplicity (same buff duration) for better gameplay

Wait, so you're saying that you expected the entire community and possible developers to start work on a product based on an answer of an FAQ?

Dude, this is mindblowing. This is the worst communication I've ever seen from any community interaction ever.

I normally defend you guys, because I'm also a software developer and I know your struggles. But dude this just straight up failure, legitimately

No, that wasn't the ask - I didn't think someone would scroll through a post, see that and decide to build a product. A lot of folks did see that though and contact us about the opportunity.

We've gone a little bit down a rabbit hole here - I saw something I didn't think was fair, I tried to correct it and that has turned into me defending how we got here. So let me take a half step back here - there is no mission accomplished banner flying over my desk on fantasy. I think the third-parties that have developed products for Spring are awesome and I'm very appreciative of their work (and the work of our data provider and the Riot 3rd Party team who has been working with some of these folks for a long time). I think when you get your hands on some of these products you are going to pretty excited about playing them week over week.

There is still a hole in the offerings around a season long product - I'm not trying to gloss over that. I also think people would be more...

Hey Captain, can you share the team's thinking on Conqueror post nerfs

MAYBE

edit: looks good to me. it's no longer stand out best keystone on Azir/Ryze/Cass/Aurelion Sol, and it's winrate isn't particularly high on core users (avg winrate across all champs is actually 50.0% exactly over all games so far on 9.24 (literally millions of games))

Shaco main here. Thank you for lowering his banrate, you have my gratitude; Shaco WR went up by 1% with the preseason patch (ugg source).

I'll be glad to be able to play him at last. (Although AP Shaco is much better than AD Shaco, AD is taking a bigger hit, that's my only issue unless the numbers actually show otherwise).

Agree AP is better right now, but Lethality is getting a small buff which should help AD build (and if we only nerfed by 5% AD ratio, that would be quite a meme nerf).

Clarifying ocean nerf. The regen period was also extended from X over 3s >>> X over 4s

Ocean soul's impact on a team's winrate in an even game was actually around twice as much as baron or cloud soul, so we are nerfing it harder than the other souls

shaco nerfs seen kinds kinda random. if its aimed at support shaco then I supposed riot is reneging on their "champs should be able to flex in multiple roles" ideology

it's aimed at AD/AP jungle and AP support. they are all like, 53-54% winrate for various player groups

Our Morde mains discord is living in constant paranoia.

You super explicitly did not say that. This is a lie.

“Our goal is still to produce something head and shoulders above the product we shut down last year. We’re pursuing a plan to do that and have something great in your hands for Spring 2020. I know you’ve heard that before (about five months ago…), but we’re going to continue to take some big swings because we really believe that we have an opportunity to deliver something that makes the LCS/LEC viewing experience so much better.”

Why would anyone attempt to develop something when your announcement says that you’re using first party resources to develop something “head and shoulders” above what they could produce???

we would empower third-parties to (and we did, and they did).

In the post I linked:

Q: Why doesn’t Riot just make the fantasy game yourself? You’re a game studio.

We tried that, and had to shut that product down six months ago. As it turns out, creating and servicing  a Fantasy Product is time and resource consuming when running fantasy isn’t your business. Fantasy isn’t our business. That’s why we’ve spent so much time searching for the right partner on this project.

The reference to the big swing was a partner we were talking to about developing a game (their game, not Riot's game). We would have worked with them to produce the app and they would have owned it and run it. The concept was cool and would have allowed you to do a lot in the app besides fantasy. The project fell apart, which sucked. So we've made sure that our 3rd party ecosystem through our data pipelines were available and have provided support to third-parties where it was needed.

If Riot had just announced in January 2019: “We’re ending support for fantasy, we encourage third parties to make their own fantasy platform” we would probably have one by now.

Instead, Riot actively sabotages the fantasy community by continuously promising that a first party option is right around the corner, so of course nobody develops one. All of the links provided in the announcement are to daily fantasy/pick-em’s because Riot has continuously promised that they were developing a complete, season long experience.

We said that in May 2019. We have not been promising that Riot was developing a fantasy platform - we said the opposite - that we weren't. What we did say is that we were looking for a partner who was building something that we could work with. In that May update we also said that if we couldn't do something ourselves, we would empower third-parties to (and we did, and they did).

I think the problem with season long fantasy leagues with friends (and what Riot's data likely shows) is that a very niche group of people would use them.

  1. Season long means a long term commitment for everyone involved to play and stay active. If people lose enthusiasm/become inactive in those groups, eventually it will hit a point where not enough people are participating to make it worth participating anymore (ie. the entire league becomes inactive).

  2. Season long means that only on season start can people really make the groups and so that shuts out people who might want to participate in fantasy leagues but aren't aware at season start (or become fans of the lcs/league after season start).

  3. Fantasy leagues with friends runs into the problem of having to have a good group of friends that are also invested/interested in competitive league enough to want to join some fantasy league style system.

Yeah, pretty much this. I think in one of the older posts about fantasy when we talked about user numbers we identified season-long and playing with a group of friends that requires an organizer to be the two biggest contributors to the death spiral of the old product. There are still some providers that are out there running successful season-long fantasy products (and we're still talking to them), but keeping engagement up week over week is hard (even for the NFL and NBA that have really successful fantasy leagues associated with them).

There is no blame for people not playing - I've talked pretty candidly about how we didn't make any changes to the fantasy product for a long time - it isn't surprising that people stopped playing - but the nature of the game (needing an organizer and being season-long) provided limitations on the ability of people to pop in and out.

We weren't great fantasy operators - but there are a lot of companies out there that are. Some are ...

An economist does an economic impact study - they have a whole methodology they use (which is pretty standard for economic impact studies).

None of the sponsors we listed are just general LoL sponsors - we have partnership agreements with each and every one for the LCS directly.

I'm guessing behind the NFL and NBA? I would love to see more data on this but this seems like an advertisers wet dream if true*.

*I'm sure they're not lying, I'm just curious when they mention the prorated part what exactly that entails.

Yup, behind the NBA and NFL.
