In terms of Random Battles, there is no Player Skill metric. You'll often find posts rquesting a "Skill-Based Matchmaker", which is not the direction we've chosen to go with Random Battles at this time.

Occasionally there has been a Brawl released that uses a form of Skill Measurement, but that's been fairly rare.

As far Radar, this does relate to the "Gameplay Balancing" in a sense. Why? Because a Tier 8 Cruiser is treated the same as another Tier 8 Cruiser. While T8 Baltimore has Radar and Tier 8 Atago does not, the Matchmaker doesn't value them differently. Because of the Strengths/Weaknesses style of balancing, Atago power comes in other areas that allows her to influence the match in other non-Radar way.

Starting position is randomized, though typically Mirrored (outside of some Division placement). Even in Clan Battles (though there's a central spawn location used)

So the video you're referring to is

This video is talking about Game Balance not "Match Balance". The video's intent is to educate the Player on how they look at design characteristics of a ship so that she is powerful in some areas, but weak in others. Every ship should have a sense of identity/role in the game because of its gameplay characteristics.

As for Matchmaker, that is covered at length in THIS video:

Two Things!

1) I see you're new to the Forum. Please don't get into personal digs with others. Yes, some topics get contentious, but keeping it civil means you'll get heard more easily~

2) While WoWs COULD go more into the simulator-style field of gaming, that really isn't the design direction of the game. We use a huge variety of Naval Themes and Concepts to build an accessible, arcade-ish game that can be enjoyed by all.

Normal Fighters are extremely weak to AA. They have a rather poor amount of health, so they can be whittled down by even low-AA surface ships.

Bearn's Fighters are much strudier, so they can actively tank some incoming AA. It's part of her Air Superiority design~

While this season is Tier 10 across all the Leagues, other seasons aren't always set up that way.

The "Qualification" period is a good way to let people know, "If you do this you'll go to the next League and not be able to drop back down." Some folks liked to stay at Tier 6 in Bronze, or Tier 8 in Silver.

You don't have to go for Gold~

Find the League that you enjoy the most! It'll refresh every 2 weeks during the current Season.

When an account gets rolledback a day, everything that happened during the day disappears from the account and it goes back to how it was at the start of the day.

So a few thing!

1) Co-Op as it is now is enjoyed by many folks. The AI may be straightforward in its execution, but it's fun to play off that and see how much a single Captain to pull off, especially if it's mostly a game filled with bots and the friendly bots die early.

2) There IS a version of AI that is more dynamic, but it's limited to Randoms Battles at Tier 4 and below. If you would like to experience bots that move and juke and such, try playing Tier 1-4 Random Battle during off-peak hours. This can provide a mostly Player vs AI experience with only the occasional player on the other side.

3) There are changes coming to Co-Op with the upcoming Patch. Boggzy elevated a concern about poor accuracy, which is getting addressed. And there could be something else to talk about as well~

Having just gone through training a literal new player of the game, I can confirm there's a LOT of information to be passed. While there are many guides and video series out there which cover a variety of topics, I'm not personally sure of a really powerful Introduction series.

Can I use your post to see if folks know of a good series of videos to recommend?

Just to avoid confusion, I'm going to lock this thread.

OP was actually playing the Console Version of the game, which isn't what this forum is for <3

I understand some folks might think it's a company line because it's said all the time, and there's a reason for that.

It's true.

I have played a few thousand games in League of Legends over the last 8 years. I've done Ranked and 3v3s and all sorts over there. Once I play the new season up to my skill level and 50%/50% out, I stop. Compare this to World of Warships, where I had over 10,000 Battles in slightly more than 2 years time.

The difference between being put into a match where you are expected to win/lose evenly, and being put in a match where even the game has no idea who will win, is something that makes for a more varied experience. It's purely down to what you bring to the table, and even then it's still going to be a wild ride.

We want World of Warships to live for decades. We've got a solid audience, but we're not a 15 million player-a-day game because we're a bit more niche in our ...

Random Battles is... Random. Literally.

While a variety of other games do use forms of Skill Based Matchmaking, there are upsides and downsides to that. Ultimately the decision to stay truly Random favors preserving the long-term replayability of World of Warships, as every battle is so Random as to be remarkably Unique. While some may disagree with this decision, it's worth noting that many players on these forums have THOUSANDS of battles, some in the TENS OF THOUSANDS.

---

There are other modes which are more delineated by skill, such as Clan Battles, some Brawls, and Ranked. While some will decry Ranked as not providing "Highly Skilled" experiences, it DOES have a process which seperates out players according to interest in advancement.

---

Lastly, there is a very informative video which was released which details the inner workings of the Matchmaker. Check it out!

The game's not easy. Straight up~

Some folks want to play around in ships and shoot stuff, and that's ok~ However, if you do want to push yourself to have a better winrate, that takes a lot of work.

I can recommend checking out Twitch streams, especially if they're educational in their content (talking about what they do and why, sort of thing).

Also, REPLAY REVIEWS! It's easy to get caught up in the moment while the battle is on, but you have all the time in the world to reflect on what happened during a Replay. You can find them in your game folder on your hard drive. The last 30 games you play are saved in the Replays folder.

---

It'll always feel daunting, and even the best players get games where they can't win. Still, you can always bring more into a match then the person across the map from you, and that bears out over hundreds and thousands of games to be in your favor.

I suppose it might be a tech tree ship that's causing buyer's remorse, but I'd assume it was a Premium paid for with Doubloons or some other special currency.

In that case, if you have 1 battle or less and want to return it, then DEFINITELY don't sell it for a handful of Credits.

Miscommunications do happen as there are thousands of people working for WarGaming. The reality is that people can still have miscommunications among even small groups. I used to work at Dominos pizza with a group of about 8 employees, and things got missed at times even in such a small environment.

That being said, WG really is working hard to try and make sure things are checked, double checked, and triple checked. Still, thousands of people mean thousands of little things to miss on any given day, which is a tough situation to overcome.

As for your concern about Santa Crates having some sneaky, invisable-to-CMs shortlist shananigans... the answer is no. No, there is no Shortlist.

But can you trust a head-in-the-dirt CM? Well, if you're feeling particularly cynical and don't want to believe my word, then consider it a different way...

WarGaming has published the drop rates ...

Either way, everything about the Group Competition is a gain of Oil. Definitely give it a go and try to have some fun~

Thank you so much! That's wonderfully helpful <3

The fine gentleperson above found the thing:

It'll return to normal once 0.10.11 kicks in. I'm guessing the pacing was thrown off at 0.10.10 was a bit short due to impending Holiday stuff.

Ok, I have more information.

Firstly, there's no harm done in playing Naval Battles in a Group Format. You can only gain Oil. The picture linked above does show a negative number on a "loss", but that's in a 1 vs 1 competition which is not a Group Competition.

I was able to find the reward structure for the Battles section of the Naval Battle (ie: Activating the thing and doing battles to gain Stars).

So, in this above instance, you are:

A) Gaining Oil from participating in the Preparation Phase. Up to 800 Oil, as well as Bonus Attempts during the weekend for a more active clan.

B) Gaining Oil for Stars won during the Weekend section of time

and

C) Gaining a minimum of 300 Oil just for participating, even if you were last. Or more should you place somewhere in the middle of the Group so that the end reward is higher.
