Is this crash while playing an MP session, or while starting up the game, or while connecting/loading the save, or what?

Is it just you that crashes, other players are okay?

As you say, this is exclusively an Epic issue.

Do you use any type of cursor customization, such as Mouse Trails in Windows? If so, please turn it off before playing the game.

I found this older report and workaround/fix for it - does that help you too?

Right-click on stellaris.exe, properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullscreen optimizations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply, and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select the fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, refresh rate 60.

THEN test with a new unmodded galaxy.

If that doesn't help:
DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log , exceptions.log

JayJJoker said: Hey so i didnt find 'cap refresh rate' so I assume you are talking about cap FPS?
When in the launcher Game Settings menu you disable Vsync, you get a Refresh Rate option (which does indeed set a line in the pdx_settings.txt file called setting_framerate_cap). Please set that to 60.

Assuming that doesn't help, you probably have the bios/CPU issue described here:

I had a similar report last week, whether here or in a ZenDesk ticket I don't recall. Like you, I don't know how Steam decides what OS you have.

What distro do you use? The previous case was on one I hadn't come across before.

Well, the error log often has cosmetic errors in it, they may or may not actually be the trigger for your crash.

I ran your 'last_save.ck3 hands-off for 5 game years with no crashes, despite there being many errors like this in my log
[13:27:30][jomini_script_system.cpp:276]: Script system error!
Error: Event target link 'compare_value' returned an unset scope
Script location: file: events/dlc/bp2/bp2_yearly_1_events.txt line: 6535
So the cause is elsewhere, it seems.

"setting_framerate_cap"={
version=0
value="off"
}
Right click on ck3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tic... Read more

If it only happens after an hour of play, it's probably an overheating issue. Is that right?

I use Macs Fan Control to check my iMac's temps, but there are other options out there. What CPU and GPU temps do you see after, say, 30 minutes in the game?

Any mods in use?

Is this crash repeatable from a particular save or saves? Or more random?

I've never used that process myself, but I guess Access Denied either means you need to ne Windows Admin to do it, or that folder does not actually exist. Can you see it?

2023.15 have been confirmed to fix the launcher startup issue we had in Linux under 2023.14. Why you get such problems with it I do not know!

The launcher also seems to have problems creating a log file, because I don't have one in .local/share/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/logs.
Hmmmm, they should definitely be there:
  • $XDG_DATA_HOME/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/logs/ (if $XDG_DATA_HOME is set)
  • ~/.local/share/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/logs/ (if $XDG_DATA_HOME is not set)
Maybe a file system access issue?

TimekillerTK said: The confusing part is that uninstalling/reinstalling the game doesn't resolve the issue.
Uninstalling in Steam only removes files that Steam put there.

Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere, and user empire designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ if you have made any custom empires or races.
- "uninstall" in Steam-Stellaris
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Stellaris AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris folders - In ... Read more

Game Version

1.9.2.1
Can I ask why you are not on the current game version, which is 1.11.2? Because if this is a bug in 1.9.2.1 it has probably already been fixed in a later version.

If your model of Mac only has an Intel video system, that is probably the cause of your problem. This game now only usesw Vulkan as a renderer, not openGL any longer. And Vulkan does not run well or in some cases at all on Intel video Macs. FYI this game has never been supported on that hardware platform since release, so really it's a matter of luck that it ever worked!

If that is the situation you can try updating MacOS to 14.x which may have a newer Intel video driver; if that doesn't help or is not possible, all you can do is revert to the previous game version 1.10.2 in the Steam betas tab for the game. Or play on any other machine you have access to with supported hardware.

If however that is not the case - ie that your Mac has AMD video - that's a different matter; let us know here and we'll look into your case more closely.

There is absolutely something wrong with the game and/or Steam as they are on this machine, I completely agree. But I'm sure it is not a general bug in the game, or all Linux users (including myself) would get it.

The Windows version issue is particulaly bizarre. How Steam detect the OS and select the appropriate game version I have no idea!

I don't suppose you have access to a Ubuntu or SteamOS installation to test the game on?

Yes, definitely. But we see the orange dot up the top-right there, which means it has installed an update.

So we are back to the libtinfo.so.6 error. I don't see any alternative to you sourcing ncurses-lib from somewhere!

That's a great question and I don't have an answer. When Install this game - any game - in my Linux VM, all that comes down is a native Linux version. I don't have Proton though, could that be confusing Steam ?

I may have misinterpreted something here ... was that log above taken just after this game freeze? Because on looking into it, I don't think there's any attempt to load a saved game, or start a new game.

If we could get a log taken immediately after the problem has occurred please.

I'm afraid I have no ability to repair bugged save game files. You could try the good folks over in the User Mods forum.

As to the bug, please make a new thread in Bug Reports and attach the save there for QA to look into.

Sorry for that problem!
