Naively I guess if the game ran fine on one video card but not another, it's not going to be the game at fault ... have you deleted the Documents folder for CK3 so the new system writes a new one?

Aso if you are running Catalyst it may be trying to 'optimise' for the game, if so unload that app and see if that changes anything.

I do not, I am sorry.

You can move any valued save games elsewhere, and user_empire_designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ if you have made any custom empires or races. Then manually delete the Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris folder completely.

So two separate problems, the launcher and the game, ISTM.

The black launcher screen in Stellaris could be this issue:

Thanks, but videos of the problem don't add much to the diagnosis of why this is happening to you. Please follow my steps laid out above, thanks.

Thought it was a bad install, temperature, etc but all solutions were moot. Sometimes I can play for hours, or sometimes minutes as it seems random. Crashed today after I opened a NPCs portrait to interact with him in the very early game.

Very strange bug which seems hard to find, other paradox games run fine as well so it's a shame the game I like the most is the only one that crashes.

Besides this forum I've seen some i...

Well, we know our launcher does not cause this to other users! I have no explanation how it could be having these effects on your machine, I have to say.

I guess try a clean reinstall of the whole launcher:

- exit the Steam app entirely
- uninstall Paradox Launcher v2 from the Windows "Apps and features" utility, if still present.

Delete the following folders if still present:

- C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

- run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user

- run the game from the PLAY button in Steam to install it again. You'll probably have to exit and re-run the launcher once or twice for it to fully update to 2021.5.2 .

If this only happens when mods are enabled then yes, it's a mod problem. Most likely candidates are ones that have not been updated to work with the 3.0.3 patch yet.

Otherwise all you can really do is use a process of elimination.

We are just not seeing this as a general problem with this game, not sure why you are having such trouble.

DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/logs/ folder, attach system.log , error.log , exceptions.log

it was c:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Paradox Interactive
There should not be any mod files in that folder, it's only for the launcher really.

I begin to think you have some larger computer or Windows problem here! Would you say you are having Windows problems outside this game at all?

I have seen that Windows error c06d007e against Stellaris before, but we never found the root cause:

You may have firewalls in your internet modem/router, even at your ISP. How did you bypass, with a VPN perhaps?

Do you have any other computers you can test this on, whether in the same location or elsewhere?

Alternatively can you try this computer in a different location?

I see, I have no idea if that is normal or not. It also seems odd to me that the two files use different slashes.

To refresh the launcher database, with the game and launcher unloaded:
- delete the file Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/mods_registry.json (if present)
- delete the file Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/launcher-v2.sqlite

Then run the game from the PLAY button in Galaxy.

If that doesn't help I wonder if I can ask you to check with the mod experts over in the User Mods forum here? They will certainly know more about getting manually installed mods working than me!

You say the game has never run, yet we see a mod error in that error log. You've subscribed to mods before you've even started playing, is that right?

The Windows error we see in tat dxdiag is typical of an antivirus app getting in the way. Did you Add stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list?

And what happened when you ran all those Microsoft installers? Did they all seem to run okay, no error or problem?

A major patch 1.4 just came out, so please do a new clean reinstall as per post #4 above, and test with a new campaign - any better?

It is not possible, I am sorry. They do not provide any way of distributing older or alternate versions of games, unlike Steam or GoG.

In the game launcher please set Display mode to Borderless. THEN go here:

The latest supported Visual C++ downloads

This article lists the download links for the latest versions of Visual C++. support.microsoft.com support.microsoft.com And run the x86 and x64 installers there.

IF that doesn't help, Has the game ever run successfully on this computer? Or never?
