Thanks for hte article btw, these are always appreciated.

Based on current investigations, they came from the same cause - that database performance issue mentioned in the article. That gummed up the player drafts, and it also created issues with the inbox messages getting distributed properly (i.e. once only) to players

Those articles/updates are very much appreciated. Even something as small as letting us know about the issue and that you are working towards a fix is what makes a difference, in my opinion. Describing what went wrong and your process is very interesting too.

As an aside I want to ask about a specific server issue that some of us in Europe faced. I personally have been getting "network error - unable to get collection" and "waiting for the server" ever since a couple of weeks before WOE release. When I messaged support and going through the usual troubleshooting the only solution that worked was using a USA based VPN. This issue was, for the most part, present until the 18th of this month (when it was completely fixed) so I was not really able to play for this timeframe. What I want to ask is: was this a known issue and is it related to the issue described...

I was not personally aware of that issue (though others on the team might have been). That does sound like an ISP-side issue. We didn't change anything on the 18th, so I suspect your ISP fixed something then

The original message about Anniversary Week rewards implied that you had to log in on specific days to be eligible for that day rewards. I would guess a lot of anxiety around those issues still not getting fixed comes from players worries that once issues get fixed, it will turn out they didn't do whatever was now required for Anniversary Week rewards, and clearing up how that eligibility will be handled would go long way in calming players down.

When the inbox gets fixed, we're going to err on the generous side here. I don't have full details worked out, but we're not going to be doing things to artificially limit the recipients here.

Thanks for the interesting article! Has there been any consideration for giving out rewards through codes like we used to get if the inbox system does not come back online?

Inbox will be back soon; we're mostly just working on resolving how safe/how soon we can get that (like the article mentions, riskier changes need to go in releases further off for more testing, safer, more vetted changes can go in with shorter timelines).

If the outage was going to last too long, we could look at codes. But codes would only hit ~30% of the players, while 85%-95% will claim rewards out of inbox. So we have a heavy preference for using the inbox to distribute things.

Intent was that anyone who logged in during the Troubled Times from Tuesday through yesterday got one mail. By some accident (not yet fully understood), some players got two mails. Bank error in your favor; enjoy!

Drafting is being unstable right now, so we've temporarily disabled it while we sort things out. If you've completed the drafting portion, you'll be able to resume your event once we're able to turn drafts back on. Sorry for the delay, but you won't lose your progress.

Happy Stonks Day! It’s been 34 days (give or take a few hours πŸ˜‰) since gold was last in the shop. As many of you have no doubt noticed, the gold deal and seven of the card styles showed up early at 12:00am UTC instead of the usual 3:00pm UTC. Make sure you grab the deals you want before they expire in nine instead of 24 hours!

For the past few weeks it seems like this has been a common occurrence in the Daily Deals where on some days a few new deals will show up after the fact at 12:00am UTC. As everything with today’s deal was released early, it will be interesting to see what happens at 12:00am UTC. Perhaps u/WotC_Jay could please kindly clarify if this is intended behavior with the Daily Deals moving forward or if something else is afoot and if it’s being looked a...

Timing of the deal transitions yesterday was a bug, not intended. Deals are still supposed to transition at 8am PT, but some bad data has made some roll over at midnight UTC

We are very few in number compared to the overall playerbase. And we come in all variety of ranks. (I'm usually low-ranked constructed, for example, because I spent 90% of my time in limited.)

Packs you open for draft or sealed deckbuilding will not care about the cards you have in your collection. Having 4x of a rare will not prevent it showing up (otherwise you would just craft 4x of all the bad rares to ensure you got good ones, right?).

If you get a rare/mythic you have 4x of, you will get 20/40 gems as normal. And the packs you earn as rewards from draft or sealed are duplicate protected like any other packs

Wilds of Eldraine is out, and now's the time to build your skills with the new set as we approach Arena Open: Wilds of Eldraine, happening this weekend, September 16–17. You won't even need a well-stocked collection to be competitive, because this tournament features Limited formats: Sealed Best-of-One and Best-of-Three on Day 1,

The last Limited Arena Open shows that they have the capability to run Draft on Day 1, but they choose to go Sealed for...rea$on$.

When we run D1 as sealed, more players play in the Open than when D1 is draft. Our assumption is that more players prefer sealed here, or at least they find it more welcoming or approachable. We've also talked with the people that run big tabletop events, and they found sealed to be more approachable and net better for day 1. In any case, we like to do the thing that gets more players involved in playing the cool Magic event. That's why it's usually sealed for day 1.
Cube is different. Synergy-based collations tend to need the flexibility of draft for players to assemble interesting decks, so we ran cube as draft-draft. But, in general, the data shows more players prefer sealed-draft, so that's what we generally run

I like Pioneer and I like to draft... I am worried that this will be a set full of cards I already have on Arena.

The focus will be on new-to-Arena cards. Maybe a couple reprints at C/U if the format needs them specifically, but it will be about bringing new cards to Arena in a fun, draftable format

For me, draftability and pack cracking is a huge part of getting my hands on MTGA cards, and the lack-there-of being one of the reasons why anthology cards (and explorer in general) feels so inaccessible. Like many other Explorers, I'm stuck opening standard/supplemental set packs that have little to no impact on my format of choice, and I need to scrounge wildcards to be able to afford the countless anthology cards I'm looking to get. Pioneer Masters seems to remedy that.

If you're able to answer, will Pioneer Masters be draftable? Will cards from the Explorer Anthologies be included in this set? If not, will your team maybe be implementing an alternate way to acquire these Anthology cards?

Thanks Jay!

Pioneer Masters is 100% draftable, and is designed to appeal to players like you describe. So I hope there are a lot of you :)
