Your Windows 7 has had no major updates applied since 2014. Our games are only ever tested on Windows that is fully patched up.

Please run the Windows Updater manually, apply everything it finds, and reboot. Keep doing that until it is fully up to date, which may take several iterations. Boring I know, but you have a lot of catching up to do!

You may need to then run those VC++ installers again after that.

Good luck!

Then it seems clearly an issue with his computer, local network or ISP. Lacking the ability to try different computers or networks I can't really see how to narrow it down further, I'm sorry. They definitely can't install the games on another machine elsewhere, say another friend or relative, as a test?

Please try the following:

- unsubscribe from all mods
- delete the folder Documents/paradox/Stellaris/mod/
- delete the file Documents/paradox/Stellaris/mods_registry.json
- delete the file Documents/paradox/Stellaris/launcher-v2.sqlite
- subscribe to a few mods
- run the game up and see if those mods are now available to you.

I hope that does it for you!

I was thinking he must have Steam ports blocked by a firewall somewhere, but the stellaris_test branch uses different ports so that seems unlikely.

Has this always happened for him with this game? Or it was okay up to some point?

Does it also affect our similar games CK2, EU4 or HOI4? CK2 is free to play on Steam now FYI.

What happens when he tried to join, any error?

Any mods involved here?

Can he try from a different machine, either on the same network or elsewhere, as a test?

You see portraits from a DLC you don't have, but not ones from a DLC you do have? It's ... hard to see how that is possible! Are you sure you don't have them mixed up? You can see them next to each other here:

It's hard to see how it's possible that only part of a DLC works, it should be all or nothing. But you don't give much detail about what exactly you believe is missing and how you are checking for that.

You may as well try a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere, and user_empire_designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ if you have made any custom empires or races.
- "uninstall" in Steam-Stellaris
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Stellaris AND Documents/Paradox/Stellaris folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular you need to make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam Stellaris o... Read more

The crash is in an AMD video driver:
Fault Module Name: atiumd64.dll
yet there is no AMD video listed in that dxdiag. Was there perhaps an AMD card that has been removed? If so yu should use this utility to remove its drivers:

The checksum you quote here is correct, but is that what you see in the main game menu? Or just in the launcher?

If you see something different in the main game menu, you need to do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere, and user_empire_designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ if you have made any custom empires or races.
- "uninstall" in Steam-Stellaris
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Stellaris AND Documents/Paradox/Stellaris folders

No obvious problems evident in those files; although the game is not supported on Intel video systems that would normally only make it run slow, not crash. Because it's Windows 7 we don't get any crash data in dxdiag.

If you exit the Steam app entirely then run stellaris.exe directly from File Explorer, do you see any Windows error when it crashes?

Our similar game Crusader kings 2 is free to play onSteam now, does it have a similar problem?

That means your AV app has quarantined it. You need to release it from quarantine, and tell it to leave it alone in future!

We now have reports of this on AVG, Avast and possibly Kaspersky.

You need to make sure all these apps are in its exceptions lists:

dowser.exe (in the Steam Stellaris folder)
C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2020.16/paradox launcher.exe
C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/bootstrapper-v2.exe

Good luck!

The Epic games have encapsulated launchers which don't need to update, the message is probably bogus. Can you play okay ?

Has this always happened ever since you've had the game? Or only since when?

Does anything like that happen with HOI4 or CK2?

DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/Stellaris/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox/Stellaris/logs/ folder, attach system.log , error.log .

Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ after say 10 minutes' play.
If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install

Please try this:

- exit the Steam app entirely
- uninstall Paradox Launcher v2 from the Windows "Apps and features" utility, if still present.

Delete the following folders if still present:

- C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

- run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user

- run the game from the PLAY button in Steam

IF that doesn't help, in this folder are some .log files:
C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
Please attach them here.

Note that you can run stellaris.exe directly from Windows Explorer, which bypasses the launcher.

Does the workaround in that thread for EU4 not work for Stellaris for you? It really should.

For the code update question, please post in the Bug Reports forum if it's not there already. Thanks!

Il legionario said: also when i try to run the application from the steam folder i get error 0xc000007b
That usually means a missing or bad Windows DLL. What happened when you ran those 4 MS installers above? Any error or problem with any of them?
