You mean the Steam client here?

In Task manager-processes do you see stellaris.exe still in there, or components of the launcher (cpatch, dowser, bootstrapper)?

I've seen this caused by anti-virus apps in the past - What antivirus app do you use? You need to make sure all these apps are in its exceptions lists:

stellaris.exe and dowser.exe (in the Steam stellaris folder)

I am sorry, I see nothing to explain this problem with this game in any of the files you've sent in.

I don't really see any way forward other than a Windows Reset or complete wipe and reinstall - a lot to contemplate to get a game going, I know! How do you feel about that idea?

Did you mean to post this in Bug Reports, perhaps?

Is this only in MP, not solo play?

Any mods involved?

Is this the PC or Console edition?

That should not at all be necessary - the game is developed under Win10 and 11 after all!

Right click on stellaris.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, then cap the refresh rate at 60.

If that doesn't help, what happens if you run stellaris.exe directly from File Explorer? Any error show then?

This game is no longer supported in the standalone launcher platform; if you installed it there you'd get an older version.

It must be installed and play via Steam I'm afraid.

Do you have a savegame I could take a look at? Though I will say anything above the default settings (Stars, empires etc) is cruising for a bruising.
Stellaris is a game of calculations, the more calculations you introduce, the slower things go.

Mods being installed cannot have any effect on the launcher.

It is not at all clear why the server is rejecting your launcher's attempts to contact it. If you have been running a VPN all the time, can you try disconnecting it ?

Otherwise try uninstalling the launcher, then install it with this updated one:

I honestly don't know what is causing that to you. What launcher version do you see? Current is 2023.4.1

What if you exit Steam then run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user?

If that doesn't help, can you connect this machine to the internet via a VPN (or failing that a mobile phone hotspot) to see if that gets past it?

Mcgan said: Eh, really? This one purely visual bug that has no effect on actual gameplay will be fixed in 2~3 months (or the upcoming open beta that may or may not happen)?
Before the many other bugs that do have an effect on gameplay and have existed for far longer? Ok, good to know. I can see a few reasons for that, but it's still weird.
Maybe up-voting bug reports is worth doing now.
We can fix more than one thing at a time, we'll be grabbing more issues from 3.7.4 for 3.8 as time allows. Can't let visual bugs accumulate either.

Palillo said: So unfortunately it seems that if it is not fixed by the community, this bug will remain for at least months or maybe years, as has already happened with other bugs.
Chill. This will be fixed in 3.8.

I see you have OneDrive running. Right click on Documents in the left column of File Explorer, just under This PC there. Go to properties, location. What does it say in there?

And there are quite a few failed Windows updates in there. Run the Update utility, apply everything it finds, and reboot.

And please run both these Windows repair tools:

Thanks for your help.
This isn't something we can fix as it's not the games fault. What I think has happened is that the gamepass app/most recent Windows update changed permissions and since you've got it installed in the Windowsapps folder it most likely won't work. Please try what Andrew suggested above:

  1. Uninstall the game
  2. Open the game pass app
  3. ...

Our similar game Crusader Kings 2 is free to play on Steam now. Does it work or have the same problem?

Please install and run the free utility Speccy. Send its output to a text file and attach that here, thanks.

I have, and I see you are running the game as Admin. Just as your screenshots says. Please don't do that, it causes problems all by itself.

And I'd much prefer you respond with text and screenshots, not movies. Thanks.

I won't delete the post, others may be helped by it.

No need to attach the files if the problem is fixed, thanks.

Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere, and user empire designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ if you have made any custom empires or races.
- "uninstall" in Steam-Stellaris
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Stellaris AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular you need to make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam Stellaris or Documents Stellaris locations, before installing again.

SniipahPowah said: Okay well if its just "Uninstalling a program" when I try to remove the driver is doesn't do it or open a window to accept. So I am struggling to remove. Any guidance with steps?
I'm asked hundreds of users to do this over the years .. no idea why it would not work on this machine !

All you should have to do is go into Control Panel, Programs, Uninstall a Program, and enter nVidia in Search there. Click on each line then on Uninstall/Change , up the top. Answer yes in the confirm dialog and you are done.
