It's intended as a basic indicator telling you if your warehouse is filling or emptying for a specific good.
It's useful on a basic level especially in early game to see if you're e.g. running out of fish and might need to add another fishery to meet demand.
For a more detailed view, check the statistics screen (Ctrl + Q).

And OP put it very well: we have both players not being a fan of huge islands and players who'd prefer us to get rid of islands and just give them large landmasses to build cities on.
For us, islands are an essential part of Anno and provide one of its core challenges: space management. The "standard" will therefore very likely remain normal islands (which, after all, also exist in different sizes) - however, that does not mean we're ruling out huge islands at all.
We certainly did learn some lessons from their implementation in Anno 1800, though, and also monitored discussions like this to hopefully find a solution that addresses some of the feedback.
To be honest, I don't fully understand what your idea is.
Do you want to allow players to decide what the needs are that need to be fulfilled? To replace e.g. fish with canned food for Farmers? Or give investors some beer instead of chocolate?
Or is it about categories, i.e. "they want food, but I can give them whatever I want as long as it's a food item"?
In both situations, there's a big balance question, since the efforts to create specific products of course greatly varies (i.e. champagne vs fish), which is currently reflected in the way these products are assigned to specific population tiers and the effects they have for the respective population tier.
That would require a very flexible system that has different values for each product for each population tier - and there are many open questions like: do Investors even get any bonus from fish, considering its super low production effort?
Is that a "I know there will be another one because logic," or a "I know there's another one because I'm working on it,"? I won't bother asking any more questions because I know all staff will be under NDA about thing such as this.
I'm gonna do a pro move and quote from our blog from December 2022:
"While we do not have anything concrete to announce at this point, given the popularity of Anno 1800 it should not be a surprise that we are working on the future of Anno."

Its true. I love my PS5 but Steam/PC is needed for certain games. Anno is amazeballs on Steam. I thought I read that its coming off Steam in the near future so you better download what you need now
No idea where you read that, but there are no such plans. We (and other Ubisoft games) only returned to Steam in late 2022.
I'm sure you've heard the news. Ubisoft exec said customers need to get used to not owning games. If this comment about removing off steam is true, than it fits into that plan. I bought anno on uplay anyways. I don't care what platform it's on as long as it's not locked behind a monthly subscription.
There are absolutely no plans to remove Anno 1800 from Steam.
And regarding the subscription topic: This comment was solely related to subscription models (Ubisoft+ specifically, Ubisoft's subscription service) and has absolutely nothing to do with games that were purchased "normally".

Not really, or at least it's not something that I remember us receiving reports about in recent times, sorry :/
Or just slow it down to real time, or 1 min per sec, or something like that; that would be the same thing as a pause. It looks beautiful but it's no fun having to leave my planning because of some fire in another region, or an expedition, or whatever. Plus there are so many controls to learn and production pieces to optimize it's impossible to keep up. Like the other guy said, about 10 hours in the game goes from amazing to "this is too much like work" to "screw this, I'm going to play Need for Speed Rivals just so I can relax".
Hey, as I wrote above, we're aware of the sentiment you (and others) shared, but due to the technical limitations, this is nothing that will be implemented for Anno 1800.
This little ad was produced for Season 4's third DLC (New World Rising), see the mentioning of Manola and electric scooters, back in 2022.
We (and Ubisoft as a whole) are focusing on the key languages which - from our experience and data - make up the majority of our player base and/or are relevant in specific regions (and unfortunately, Brazil is nowhere near the top 5, I'm not sure where you're taking your data from).
As fhackner3 said below, we have read the feedback regarding a PT-BR localization for future projects and will keep that in mind, but there are no plans to add more languages to Anno 1800.

Well, "next" project as in "the next one to release". So, yes, for us it's "current" and for all of you it's "next after Anno 1800" :P

We’re back at work after our holiday break, time to let you know what’s coming up in the next months.
First of all: expect a slower start in terms of news and blogs from us this year.
In early Spring we’ll have more information on the next Cosmetic DLC (including a livestream with our artist Laura), the theme of which may or may not have been “leaked” at the end of last year.
The boardgame enthusiasts among you can also look forward to an expansion to the Anno 1800 boardgame, also coming in Spring 2024. We’ll keep you updated on any news our friends at Kosmos have on this.
