Hey TheSummerbird, thanks for getting in touch and sorry to hear about the issue you ran into there, as I fully appreciate that after investing so many hours you do not want to start all over again.

Could you clarify as to what happens when you attempt to launch your old save?

Additionally, if your friend is able to access the DLC content then he is rather fortunate as having content between different clients is very likely to cause compatibility issues. For more information, click here.

They've been able to reproduce this issue during their own testing, and are currently looking into what could potentially be causing this issue. Pirates and those AI cannons usually don't even attack each other, unless the pirates start attacking another ship in the cannon's range, then the cannons begin shooting the pirates, once the pirates destroy the ship they will begin shooting the cannons if they can while moving away from the cannons.
So its quite possible in some situations the pirates just destroy the cannons, at which point the cannons never come back and stay permanently destroyed...
